Florida Humanities provided $14,800 to 11 public libraries and library systems across the state for summer reading programming in 2023 in the inaugural Summer Reading Program Funding Opportunity. Funded programming complements the Collaborative Summer Library Program’s 2023 theme “All Together Now”, connecting readers to the humanities by exploring personal and cultural commonalities and differences and encouraging exploration, collaboration, and understanding between readers and within themselves.

Funded programming is listed below:

Broward Public Library Foundation (Broward) – $1,500
The Broward Public Library Foundation will use funding to implement a four-week family engagement session encouraging literacy and togetherness.

Calhoun County Public Library (Calhoun) – $1,500
The Calhoun County Public Library will use funding to support a storytelling and music presentation by the Colquitt Miller Arts Council and book distribution.

DeSoto County Library (DeSoto) – $1,500
The DeSoto County Library will use funding to support three programs featuring local storytellers and artists and enhance their current circulating collection.

Gulfport Public Library (Pinellas) – $1,100
The Gulfport Public Library will use funding to support three interactive author programs and a recurring book club for young readers.

Lake Worth Beach Public Library (Palm Beach) – $1,000
Lake Worth Beach Public Library will use funding to enhance their current circulating collection and distributed titles throughout summer reading 2023.

Lighthouse Point Library (Broward) – $1,500
The Lighthouse Point Library will use funding to support three outreach programs with the Museum of Science and Discovery and the Morikami Museum along with circulating and distributed titles.

Palm Beach County Library (Palm Beach) – $1,500
The Palm Beach County Library will use funding to support four sessions of Orisirisi, an African folklore, music, and storytelling group at four branches in the county.

Palm Springs Public Library (Palm Beach) – $1,500
The Palm Springs Public Library will use funding to support two public programs highlighting South American and Latin American culture through music and storytelling and enhance their current circulating collection.

Santa Rosa County Library System (Santa Rosa) – $1,500
The Santa Rosa County Library System will use funding to provide titles for teen readers throughout summer reading 2023.

Volusia County Library System (Volusia) – $1,500
The Volusia County Library System will use funding to support the creation of four book discussion kits for programming with the Lyonia Environmental Center’s summer camps.

Winter Park Public Library (Orange) – $700
The Winter Park Public Library will use funding to support a four-week creative writing course for tweens.
