In 1958 Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving were married in Washington, D.C. Mildred was African American; Richard was white. Later they returned home to VA where interracial marriage was against the law.
How the humanities keep us free
The humanities are not fluff. Too often, an argument arises over their worth, some dismissing the study of the humanities as an intellectual luxury that doesn’t pay off in the real world.
Our Commitment
Florida Humanities expresses our shared grief for the recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and so many others who have lost their lives as a result of racial violence. It is our obligation to use the humanities to understand racism and injustice and how to curb their influence in society.
