Healing the Humanities during a Global Pandemic
When history took an unprecedented turn in 2020 and a global pandemic pushed society to its limits, doors closed, windows shuttered, and the world retreated to safety in isolation. The result was a rapid decline in revenue for many of Florida’s vital cultural institutions.
Keeping The Arts Thriving
Why the humanities matter in troubled times
In 1958 Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving were married in Washington, D.C. Mildred was African American; Richard was white. Later they returned home to VA where interracial marriage was against the law.
How the humanities keep us free
The humanities are not fluff. Too often, an argument arises over their worth, some dismissing the study of the humanities as an intellectual luxury that doesn’t pay off in the real world.
Our Commitment
Florida Humanities expresses our shared grief for the recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and so many others who have lost their lives as a result of racial violence. It is our obligation to use the humanities to understand racism and injustice and how to curb their influence in society.
Help Us Tell the Story of Florida Together
How do we develop a sense of unity and cohesion, where immigrants and natives, retirees and transplants, think of Florida as something bigger than our own group or ourselves?
Finding Shared Values
Today I want to say “thank you” to our members; a deep and sincere thank you for your support of the humanities and the Council over the years.
Celebrating the power of the word
Words, carefully chosen and placed in the right order, convey who we are and what we value. It is no surprise that literature, poetry, and the study of languages are considered essential humanities studies.
We Gather from everywhere to build Team Florida
Chances are you were not born in Florida. Only a little more than a third of us are native-born residents. The humanities, with all its reach and depth, can help us build Team Florida.
What are the Humanities
The study and discussion of literature, history, culture, and like subjects are not academic fluff. They help us understand ourselves and each other, and in this time of polarization, what could be more important?
