Coffee & Conversations: Dance Music in Central Florida
March 5 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The Orange County Regional History Center is hosting a curator talk with Jeremy Hileman, History Center assistant curator, and longtime Orlando DJ and club owner John Gardner (Faith in Physics, Beach Club, Barbarella, Independent Bar) for a special tour of the latest exhibition, “Figurehead: Music & Mayhem in Orlando’s Underground.” Figurehead tells the story of how the musical promotion company helped grow the local scene with a focus on underground rock music and the club circuit. Through Binion’s own experiences, the two will dive into themes throughout the exhibit and explore the experience of singer-songwriters in the Central Florida music scene.
Hileman and Gardner will talk about topics including Gardner’s long-running residency, spinning at his Orange Avenue nightclub, as well as the dance-music scene of the 1980s and ’90s. Gardner will also share stories of legendary rock shows that took place at his venue, including the Smashing Pumpkins and The Flaming Lips.
Admission is free, but registration is required. The exhibition and related programming are funded in part through a Florida Humanities Community Project Grant in partnership with the Orange County Regional History Center.
