DeLand Black Heritage Celebration

DeLand Black Heritage Celebration

The St. Johns River-to Sea Loop Alliance is hosting a street celebration of the significance of the heritage zone and its connection to downtown DeLand open to the public with educational programming featuring the DeLand Black Heritage Trail. The program at 3 pm discusses the project’s progress and goals, description of the heritage sites featured in the self-guided tours, and an introduction to the community partners supporting the project. The program concludes with a reenactment of James W. Wright by historical reenactor Vernon Burton. The celebration also includes food trucks, community organization booths, games, prizes, and entertainment.

Funding for this program and the DeLand Black Heritage Celebration are provided in part through a Florida Humanities Community Project Grant with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and in partnership with the St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop Alliance. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Florida Humanities or the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional support is provided by the City of DeLand, The Greater Union First Baptist Church, Mark Shuttleworth, the Emmanuel Seventh-Day Adventist Church, the Pillar Ground Church, the African American Museum of Art, Stetson University, and the DeLand Police Athletic League
