Florida Cattle Ranching: Five Centuries of Tradition

This presentation covers centuries of Florida’s cattle ranching history, starting with the introduction of cattle and horses in the 16th century by the Spanish. Bob Stone illuminates themes of cultural identity, customs, and beliefs in this presentation that shows audiences that cattle ranching is not just a business, but a way of life and complete culture. Admission is free. Registration is suggested but not required to attend.
Bob Stone is a folklorist and photographer based in Gainesville. In 2011, the Florida Department of State honored him with the Florida Folk Heritage award in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a lifelong advocate of the folk arts of Florida. He served as co-curator for the exhibition “Florida Cattle Ranching: Five Centuries of Tradition,” which has been viewed by more than 600,000 people. He has written more than 80 feature articles for the Florida Cattleman magazine.
This Florida Talks program is a partnership between Florida Humanities and the Friends of the Leesburg Public Library.
