Florida History and Cultural Festival | The DuVals: The First Family of Florida

March 23 @ 12:00 pm - 3:15 pm

The Ormond Beach Historical Society hosts the Florida History and Cultural Festival on March 23. The festival includes several museums, authors, artists, and historical artifact collectors and exhibitors. The folklorist presentation, occurring from 2:15-3:15 pm, features William Pope DuVal who was appointed the first governor of Florida in 1821. DuVal was responsible for establishing a government for Florida, creating a capital, and spreading American culture. Together with his wife Nancy Hynes, Gov. DuVal spurred population growth for the new colony. Governor DuVal and his wife are portrayed by David Fussell and Kathy Kniery. Kniery and Fussell are Florida storytellers who have been crafting their stories together over the past 8 years. Together they perform stories about the history and folklore of Florida and family.

Funding for this speaker series is provided in part through a Florida Humanities Community Project Grant with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and in partnership with the Ormond Beach Historical Society. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Florida Humanities or the National Endowment for the Humanities.
