History of Folk Music: Groundbreakers and Innovato

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Florida International University is hosting a second lecture series on Folk Music from the 60s in collaboration with Brockway Memorial Library. The 1960s was a tumultuous time in America. The Civil Rights movement and The Vietnam War affected a new generation commonly called “the Baby Boomers”, who were now entering college and expressing their freedom and power. Beatniks, then hippies, represented an alternative lifestyle foreign and scary to the previous generation, and protests and marches sometimes ended badly. Folk music spoke to these issues and became the popular music of the time. Michael Stock will lead this series featuring the music of The 1960s, the beginning of the protest movement in song, and where it is today. This first session will explore the giants of the music business and the artists who created new sounds from both the advancing technology and access to other influencing expressions.

This session is the first of four in a series; however, it is not necessary to attend all four Saturdays. Each session may be attended individually. Registration is required. This program is funded in part through a Florida Humanities Greater Good: Humanities in Academia Grant in partnership with Florida International University.
