James Weldon Johnson Park and Local Black History

The Ormond Beach Historical Society is hosting their 2022-2023 live Speaker Series program. The tenth lecture explores James Weldon Johnson Park in Jacksonville, Florida as site of contested memory, specifically of racial violence and Black resistance. Felicia Bevel also discusses this public space as a lens to understand Black history in Florida and important activists such as A Philip Randolph, Mary McLeod Bethune, Eartha White, and Rodney Hurst..

Felicia Bevel is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of North Florida where she teaches courses on topics such as the civil rights movement and Black Transnationalism. She also serves on the advisory boards of the Digital Humanities Institute and Africana Studies

This program is free, including an opening reception with refreshments at 9:30AM. Free parking is available in the lot adjacent to the building, and the handicap entrance is at the rear of the building.

Funding is provided in part through a Florida Humanities Community Project Grant with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and in partnership with the Ormond Beach Historical Society.
