Latin American/Latinx Film Festival: Bacurau

October 6, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The University of Central Florida’s School of Politics, Security, and International Affairs is hosting the fifth event in the “Latin American/Latinx Film Festival” to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. A series of films will be presented along with a Q&A with the directors of the films and scholars. This event is in person with a virtual participation option. Bacarau, a small village in the Brazilian sertao, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants notice the village has literally vanished from online maps and a UFO-shaped drone is seen flying overhead. There are forces that want to expel them from their homes, and soon, in a genre-bending twist, a band of armed mercenaries led by Udo Kier arrives in town picking off the inhabitants one by one. Award-winning and critically acclaimed, Bacurau is a box office sensation seen in Brazil by over a million people. Following the film, a discussion will be led by one of the directors Juliano Dornelles and Professor Sandra Sousa of UCF. This film is appropriate for mature audiences including graphic images.

UCF parking is by virtual permit; $5 before 5:30 p.m. and $3 after 5:30 p.m. Daily permits may park in any “D” parking lots and garages. For access to the virtual platform, registration is required. Funding for this series of film screenings and discussions is provided in part through a Florida Humanities Greater Good: Humanities in Academia Grant with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and in partnership with the University of Central Florida. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Florida Humanities or the National Endowment for the Humanities.
