Maritime industries have long been the backbone our local and state economy. This one-day educational event will feature displays and demonstrations of maritime skills such as sponge diving & processing; fishing nets and other equipment; foodways such as mullet smoking and Greek kavourmas; boat building; oystering; shrimp, grouper, mullet, mackerel and snapper fishing; fly tying and more. It also will offer interviews with participants about their work and challenges, maritime resource management, and the impact of net bans and other legislation. Participants will include Kristin Sweeting/Florida Maritime Museum; Bob Pitt/boat building; Taso Karistinos/sponge diver & captain; Nicholas Toth/sponge diving helmet maker; Nick Koulianos/kavourmas (traditional preserved meat dish for sponge boats); Julie Russell/ Pelican Point Seafood (fishing and distribution); Wallace W. Ericson/shrimping, dredging, fishing; Donald C. Sawyer/mullet fishing; Gary Alberts/stone crabbing; Bill Gresko/sponge trimming; John Tsataros/model sponge boats; Suncoast Fly Fishers/saltwater fly tying; and others. Visitors may informally engage in discussion with demonstrators at tables or listen when they are interviewed on stage.
