Other Music: A Documentary Screening with Sandy Bitman

November 17, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Orange County Regional History Center is hosting a film screening of “Other Music” in collaboration with their latest exhibition, Figurehead: Music & Mayhem in Orlando’s Underground. Figurehead tells the story of how the musical promotion company helped grow the local scene with a focus on underground rock music and the club circuit.

“Other Music” is a film that documents the closing of New York City’s beloved record store of the same name. The documentary celebrates the role of record stores as hubs around which music communities are built and explores the question of how the spirit of these communities can live on in the streaming age. Following the film, Sandy Bitman, owner of the Orlando institution Park Ave CDs, and Bobby Sirkin, course director of audio production at Full Sail University, will lead a discussion on how the themes highlighted in the film play out today in our community, including the impact of digital streaming on the music industry and music communities. Sandy will share his thoughts on the role Park Ave CDs has held in our community and why it has survived while so many independent record stores are closing across the nation. The discussion will also consider where we go from here to maintain our own music communities in Orlando.

This program is free to attend, but registration is suggested.

The exhibition and related programming are funded in part through a Florida Humanities Community Project Grant in partnership with the Orange County Regional History Center.
