Cancelled! Speaker Series (Dr. Martha Bireda): Commemorating the 400th Anniversary of First Enslaved Africans

March 23, 2020 @ 6:30 pm

Powerful Doctoring Women by Martha R. Bireda

This year marks the 400th anniversary of the first enslaved Africans brought forcibly to an English occupied North America. To commemorate the struggle of the enslaved, Timucuan Parks Foundation, Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, and the Jacksonville Public Library, will offer a series of speaker events that honor the skill and craftsmanship of the enslaved and tackle slavery’s lasting legacy.

March 23, Dr. Martha Bireda will present her living history program Powerful Doctoring Women, an examination of the enslaved women who kept other enslaved Africans healthy on a plantation.

March 30, Dr. Anthony Dixon will present his program The African Diaspora Experience in Florida, an examination of Florida’s relationship with African descendants, from 1513 to the present.

This event is funded in part by a Florida Humanities Community Project Grant, in partnership with the Timucuan Parks Foundation.
