Ten Foods That Define Florida

November 25, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Ten Foods of Florida is an ever-evolving list, involving arguments as to whether strawberry shortcake or pecan pie should topple Key Lime pie as the Sunshine State’s most iconic dessert, or whether the Cuban is more significant than a fried grouper sandwich. This illustrated talk also discusses Cortez mullet, Vernon gophers, LaBelle swamp cabbage, Ybor City Cuban bread, stone-ground grits, Immokalee tomatoes, and Hastings potatoes and the lamentation of the decline of iconic foods such as whole-hog BBQ and Apalachicola oysters.

Gary R. Mormino is the Frank E. Duckwall professor emeritus in history at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. He continues to teach a class in Modern Florida and World War II. Presently, he is the scholar in residence for Florida Humanities. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. His most recent title Dreams in a New Century was published by the University Press of Florida in May 2022.

Registration and admission fee is required to attend. To reserve seats, call 727-953-8356 or email [email protected] with your name and number in your party. Admission includes entry to the museum’s exhibits and refreshments.
