The Chicago World’s Fair: A Century of Progress

July 16 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

I welcome the celebration you are now beginning. It is timely not only because it marks a century of accomplishment, but it comes at a time when the world needs nothing so much as a better mutual understanding of the peoples of the earth. The preceding quote is an excerpt from President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s message to the Chicago World’s Fair on May 27, 1933. Librarian Tim Wilcox presents a lecture on the importance of the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair to the United States’ political landscape in the 1930s.

Registration is required to attend. Audience members can attend in person at the library in Meeting Room A or on Zoom. This program accompanies Voices and Votes: Democracy in America opening at the Leesburg Public Library on November 16, 2024.

Voices and Votes: Democracy in America is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and Florida Humanities. Support for the local exhibition and programming was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Florida Humanities or the National Endowment for the Humanities.
