The Sound of the Sea: Seashells and the Fate of Oceans

Explore the human fascination with seashells and their ancient history as global currency, their use as religious and luxury objects, and the remarkable marine mollusks that make them in Ms. Barnett’s engaging account of an aspect of nature and culture long hidden in plain sight. Barnett illuminates the beauty and wonder of seashells as well as human ingenuity and scientific solutions they represent for the warming world. Registration and a $5.00 admission fee are required to attend. This program is part of public programming for Vizcaya Museum and Garden’s contemporary art exhibit Wish Towers, on view through April 17, 2023.
Cynthia Barnett is an award-winning environmental journalist and author of four books, including her latest The Sound of the Sea: Seashells and the Fate of Oceans, named one of the best science books of the year by NPR’s Science Friday, and Rain: A Natural and Cultural History was longlisted for the National Book Award. She is the Environmental Journalist in Residence at the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications in Gainesville, where she lives with her family. This Florida Talks program is a partnership between Florida Humanities and the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.
