Unity360 Critical Race Film Series: Green Book

November 28, 2020 @ 7:00 pm

Need to ramp up those warm fuzzies for the holiday season? That’s what filmmaker Peter Farrley intended with our next offering in SFPoC’s Unity360 Critical Race film series. Called a “feel-good charmer,” 2018’s Green Book swept that year’s awards season, with Oscars wins for Best Screenplay and Best Picture, as well as Best Motion Picture from the Golden Globes and Producers Guild of America. Mahershala Ali, who plays the role of real-life jazz musician Don Shirley, won Best Supporting Actor from the Oscars, Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA, and the Golden Globes. Titled after a travel guide for Black folks during the Jim Crow Era that mapped out hotels, restaurants, and clubs for Black patrons, the film chronicles the relationship between Shirley and the white, tough-guy driver he hires to escort him on his 1962 concert tour of the South. The film currently has an audience score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Will Lutze Segu, Brittony King, Quincie Ducet, Heather Burdick, and SFPoC’s own Executive Director, Roni Bennett, agree? Join us on November 28th at 7pm to watch the film together and find out.
