With the passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act on March 27, 2020 the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) received $75 million to distribute to cultural institutions affected by the coronavirus, COVID-19. Approximately 40 percent of the appropriation, or $30 million, was entrusted to the 56 state and territorial humanities councils to re-grant to our communities. As the statewide affiliate for the NEH, Florida Humanities granted $875,000 in emergency relief funds through Florida Humanities CARES to cultural and heritage institutions across Florida affected by the coronavirus crisis.

Florida Humanities CARES grants provided vital funding to support general operating costs for most vulnerable cultural organizations and communities, so that they could continue to provide opportunities for our state’s diverse communities to access and engage with public history, cultural heritage, and civic learning during this unprecedented time and in the future.
