With the passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act on March 27, 2020 the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) received $75 million to distribute to cultural institutions affected by the coronavirus, COVID-19. Approximately 40 percent of the appropriation, or $30 million, was entrusted to the 56 state and territorial humanities councils to re-grant to our communities. As the statewide affiliate for the NEH, Florida Humanities granted $875,000 in emergency relief funds through Florida Humanities CARES to cultural and heritage institutions across Florida affected by the coronavirus crisis.

Florida Humanities CARES grants provided vital funding to support general operating costs for most vulnerable cultural organizations and communities, so that they could continue to provide opportunities for our state’s diverse communities to access and engage with public history, cultural heritage, and civic learning during this unprecedented time and in the future.

Messages from Florida Humanities CARES Communities

On behalf of the Highway Park Neighborhood Council, I extend our thanks and appreciation to the Florida Humanities Cares program for awarding our agency this much-needed support. It is making a difference. Operating an agency in a low-income community is difficult during regular times, especially from a financial standpoint. We were among the first to feel the impact of the pandemic. Like the rest of the nation, our community and our agency has been profoundly, and possibly, lastingly impacted by COVID 19. Receiving these funds has been a “financial vaccination” against the impacts of the virus and it is greatly appreciated.

Tiffany Green, President

Highway Park Neighborhood Council (Lake Placid)
On behalf of the Marco Island Historical Society, I wish to thank the Florida Humanities Council for awarding our organization greatly needed help in the form of a Florida Humanities CARES Grant. The assistance that you provide will allow us to pay our staff for an additional period of time and keep the Society's mission of preserving and sharing Marco Island's History alive. We are most grateful for the care and concern of Florida Humanities for the future of cultural-based, non-profits in Florida. Your support means the world to us.

Pat Rutledge, Executive Director

Marco Island Historical Society (Marco Island)
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Military Heritage Museum, our veteran volunteers, employees, and our many visitors, I would like to thank Florida Humanities for the Florida Humanities CARES grant. They have allowed us to bring back our business development person who has already generated new and significant contributions to help offset the lost revenue we are experiencing this summer. I would also like to compliment Florida Humanities on the way they have managed this program. I have been aggressive in taking advantage of the COVID-19 funding programs put forward by various public and private entities. The Florida Humanities CARES Grant application process has been by far the best experience. Professionally handled, the timeliness has been succinct and the process fair. Thank you again for your leadership and support to Florida organizations like the Military Heritage Museum. We are grateful!

Gary Butler, Executive Director

Military Heritage Museum (Punta Gorda)
THANK YOU. The initiative from Florida Humanities in your handling of and providing to us this CARES grant funding is very significant to our Museum and programs. These funds have helped offset the cancellation of two of our major fundraising events and with the additional costs for "deep cleaning" and virus treatment of the Museum. The continued support from Florida Humanities, in terms of programs, staff expertise, and timely and well-targeted grant opportunities, is very much appreciated. You continue as a major source of support for our cultural and educational programs and impact for this region.

Bill Piotrowski & Berta Kemp, Co-Chairs

Havana History & Heritage Society Museum (Havana)
The Board of Directors, Advisory Council, organization members, and staff extend our gratitude to Florida Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities for the CARES grant which in this time of financial stress will help facilitate the Photo Archives’ fulfillment of our mission to help the greater Plant City community develop a fuller and richer understanding of its history and heritage. We have enjoyed working with Florida Humanities over the years and appreciate your understanding of the importance of the humanities in our daily lives and in the lives of the many people we serve. We have opened, cautiously, and are continually rewarded when we see the delight of our visitors when they learn more about who they are and where they came from. Thank you for helping make this possible.

Gilbert V. Gott, Executive Director
