Florida’s Got Soul!
Ray Charles, Sam and Dave, James and Bobby Purify, Betty Wright, Linda Lyndell; these are just a few of the great soul performers with Florida roots. While many rightly associate soul music with Motown, Memphis, or New Orleans, this presentation, based on John Capouya’s award-winning book Florida Soul, reveals the rich but under-appreciated musical heritage of the Sunshine State. This engaging presentation includes classic soul music and vintage photographs in an educational and entertaining experience.
John Capouya is the author of three nonfiction books. His latest work, Florida Soul, traces the evolution of R&B and funk in the Sunshine State and received the Best General Interest award from the Florida Historical Society. Professor Capouya recently retired from the University of Tampa, where he taught journalism and other nonfiction writing for the graduate MFA program. He currently works with private writing clients.
