FORUM, the magazine of Florida Humanities, received three awards at the Society of Professional Journalists Florida Pro Chapter’s annual Sunshine State Awards on August 17.
The state’s largest and oldest journalism contest, it has been honoring the best writing, photography and design for the past half-century. Award winners this year included the Tampa Bay Times, Palm Beach Post, WLRN News, WGCU and WUSF. Our Spring 2023 issue, edited by Pam Daniel and designed by David Meek, won for Best Special Publication. Titled “A Taste of Florida,” the issue featured stories about iconic Florida restaurants and foods, a profile of botanist David Fairchild and a look at the future of North Florida’s tupelo honey.
The article, The Way of the Trailer, received two awards: Best Art/Photo for Regan Dunnick’s illustration and Best Human Interest Story for Robert Plunket’s first-person account of Plunket’s experience living in a trailer on the west coast of Florida. The story appeared in the Summer 2023 issue of FORUM, “Your Summer of Reading.”
FORUM contributor Craig Pittman was also a finalist in the Serious Feature-Long Form category for his story “Gatorland.” It appeared in the Fall 2023 FORUM issue, “This Land We Love,” which focused on the state’s natural world.
