Exhibitions Opening Night: “Americans” and “Visualizing Indigenous Florida”

August 21 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us at the Amelia Island Museum of History for the opening night launch of two concurrent exhibitions: “Americans” and “Visualizing Indigenous Florida.” Based on a major exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, “Americans” explores how deeply intertwined American Indians are in the culture of the United States.

Running concurrently, the University of North Florida companion project, “Visualizing Indigenous Florida,” challenges misconceptions about Native Americans using contemporary artwork by Indigenous artists. Doors open at 5:30 pm at the Peck Center, followed by a panel discussion at 6 pm featuring UNF scholars Dr. Denise Bossy and Dr. Keith Ashley. They are joined by Mvskoke Nation Citizen Carly Treece, who is a curator and jewelry maker, alongside featured Indigenous artists who created works for the exhibit. Following the presentation, guests are encouraged to head over to the Amelia Island Museum of History for the exhibition viewing and refreshments.

The “Americans” exhibit was developed by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and adapted for travel by the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street program. The statewide exhibition tour of “Americans” is made possible by Florida Humanities. Programmatic support is provided in cooperation with Florida State University’s Native American and Indigenous Studies Center. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Florida Humanities or FSU’s NAIS Center.
