Florida Women, Advice & Social Change

March 2 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Newspaper advice columns started as lovelorn columns during Yellow Journalism as a way of showing that newspapers had a “heart.” These columns typically ran in the women’s section of metropolitan newspapers, many in Florida, and included a mixture of content, from traditional to progressive. Learn how these columns affected Floridian women’s lives and relationships in the 1950s and 1960s in this presentation.

The program will be held in the Lake Wales Public Library’s Schoenoff Meeting Room, located on the lower level, lakeside of the Lake Wales Public Library. For ease and convenience, park in the library’s south parking lot, between the library and the LW Women’s Club, or in the Oakley Park lot, across the street from the library. The main library will close before the program’s conclusion. Attendees will not be able to exit through the library’s main building. Call 863-678-4004 for clarification on parking.

Funding for this Florida Talks program is provided in part by Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and in partnership with the Lake Wales Library Association. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Florida Humanities or the National Endowment for the Humanities.
