St. Augustine Gathering 2026

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation, Florida Humanities is going back to the beginning to explore the hidden corners of St. Augustine. With the insights of scholars, artists, historians and local experts, you’ll see America’s oldest city in a new light and leave with a deeper understanding of its impact on our nation.
Activities include:
- A scenic cruise on the Matanzas River, with views of the city’s historic sites and natural beauty during the Golden Hour.
- A tour of the newly constructed replica of Fort Mose, the first free Black settlement in the United States, led by Kathleen Deagan, Distinguished Research Curator of Archaeology Emerita and the Emerita Lockwood Professor of Florida and Caribbean Archaeology at the University of Florida.
- An exploration of St. Augustine during the Revolutionary War with historian Susan Parker.
- A visit to the St. Augustine Diocese for a look at some of our nation’s oldest written documents, led by Michael Francis, Professor and Hough Family Chair of Florida Studies Department of History, University of South Florida, St. Petersburg and chief academic advisor of “La Florida: The Interactive Digital Archive of the Americas.”
- Visits to key spots in Civil Rights movement led by Michael Butler, Kenan Distinguished Professor of History, Chair of Humanities, at Flagler College
- Exclusive performances and museum tours!
