Florida Humanities has awarded $149,950 in Public Humanities Program Grants to 16 cultural organizations to support meaningful public humanities programming across Florida.
Public Humanities Program Grants provide up to $10,000 in funding to nonprofits and public institutions for public humanities programs to engage communities with the past, present, and future of the Sunshine State.
The newly awarded grants are listed below:
African American Cultural Society (Flagler) – $10,000
“Voices of Memory: From Both Sides of the Bridge”
The African American Cultural Society will conduct oral histories with long-time residents of Flagler County to explore how segregation and social change have shaped the community. The interviews will be archived as well as featured in a short documentary film and utilized at public screening and discussion events.
Brevard County Libraries (Brevard) – $10,000
“No Stone Unturned: Preserving History for Our Future”
Brevard County Libraries will create an archive of oral histories about Melbourne Vocational School, segregation and the civil rights movement in south Brevard County. Recorded content will be shared via WFIT, distributed as a podcast series, and included as part of panel discussions with scholars, elders and other members of the community.
Crealdé School of Art (Orange) – $10,000
“The Spirit of Sankofa: Black History Month 2027”
Crealdé School of Art’s Hannibal Square Heritage Center will present a month-long series of programs exploring memory and resilience in the Black community. Programming will include a scholar-led panel discussion, oral histories, walking tours of the historic community, and an artist exhibition.
Cuatrogatos Foundation (Miami-Dade) – $5,000
“Expanding ‘We the People’: Literary Perspectives from Miami’s Latino Authors”
Cuatrogatos Foundation will host a five-part program series exploring how Miami Latino writers expand our understanding of American identity and national belonging.
DJ Demp Foundation (Leon) – $7,500
“The Culture Quest: A Hip-Hop Scavenger Hunt”
The DJ Demp Foundation will host an interactive scavenger hunt with themed stations that will connect the history of hip-hop with modern creativity. The event will culminate with a panel discussion on the origins and evolution of hip-hop culture.
Florida Remembered Society (Saint Lucie) – $10,000
“Feeding the American Spirit – 250 Years of Florida’s Homegrown History ”
Florida Remembered Society will host programming to complement their “Red, White, and Food” exhibition, a collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street program. Activities will include scholar lectures, foodways walking tours, oral histories, a reading and discussion program, and various hands-on activities.
Friends of the Sarasota County History Center (Sarasota) – $7,450
“America250 at the Sarasota County History Center”
The Sarasota County History Center will celebrate America’s 250th with the unveiling of a new exhibit featuring a comparative timeline of Sarasota County and U.S. history as well as a fall lecture series on Florida topics relating to key themes in U.S. history.
Goodwood Museum and Gardens (Leon) – $10,000
“Their Stories We Tell: A Narrative by the Descendants”
Goodwood Museum & Gardens will record intergenerational narratives and family histories of descendants of people who were enslaved on Goodwood Plantation from 1832 to 1865.
Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance (Miami-Dade) – $10,000
“This is U.S. at 250: Miami’s Global Borderless Caribbean”
The Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance will host a multi-disciplinary series of conversations, performances and film screenings that explore Miami’s diasporic communities.
Hispanics of Lake County Association (Lake) – $10,000
“Finding Home: The Hispanic Experience in Lake County”
The Hispanics of Lake County Association will create a short film and host public forums that capture and share the stories and contributions of noted members of Lake County’s Hispanic community.
Merfolk Media Alliance (Pinellas) – $10,000
“Maximo Hernandez and the Fishing Ranchos of Tampa Bay”
Merfolk Media Alliance will create a short animated film and host a series of public programs about the establishment of 19th-century fishing ranchos in Tampa Bay.
Miami-Dade Public Library System (Miami-Dade) – $10,000
“AV Club: 70 Years of Public Access Cinema”
The Miami-Dade Public Library System’s Division of Special Collections and Archives will expand its AV Club programming series by hosting screening and discussion events throughout South Florida featuring films from its extensive 16mm film collection.
Mount Trial Primitive Baptist Church (Wakulla) – $10,000
“REVIVAL: Black American Spirituality in Wakulla County”
Mount Trial Primitive Baptist Church will host public programs and collect oral histories from current and former residents of Wakulla County who will reflect on their experiences, their heritage, and how Black spirituality has continued to shape the community.
Ormond Memorial Art Museum (Volusia) – $10,000
“America at 250: History through Power, Place and People”
The Ormond Memorial Art Museum will host a five-part lecture series to mark America’s 250th anniversary and the 80th anniversary of the Museum. Programming will explore Florida’s role in the broader American story while highlighting the cultural and historical heritage of Ormond Beach.
Sulphur Springs Museum & Heritage Center (Hillsborough) – $10,000
“E Pluribus Unum: Celebrating the Immigrant Heritage of Tampa Bay”
The Sulphur Springs Museum will host a national traveling exhibit, a locally curated exhibit, and a four-part lecture series that highlight the immigrant experience in Tampa Bay.
The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Florida (Ximenez-Fatio House Museum) (Saint Johns) – $10,000
“18th Century Menorcan Market Festival”
The Ximenez-Fatio House Museum will host a one-day living history event that highlights the Menorcan community’s cultural impact on St. Augustine’s history.
